COMPETITOR CATEGORIES

Listed here are the categories for the 2018 GABMC. In order to enter, purchase a ticket for your category from The National's website. The category criteria are listed here so you can choose wisely. We'll also have prejudging panels on site and at preregistration to assure that each person is in his or her correct category prior to competing.

Legal styling aids include only wax, hair spray, and other hair products.  With the exception of Artistic categories, the use of hair extensions, fake and detached hair, or any form of hair pins or supporting elements is prohibited.

The diagrams here are purely illustrative to show the essential differences between the styles.

ARTISTIC CATEGORIES

Realistic

This category is open to everyone. The goal is to create the most realistic-looking facial hair of any style following the traditional and realistic structure of a beard and moustache. Creativity in materials and an emphasis on quality and craftsmanship is encouraged. The fake facial hair should be as true-to-form, life-like, and convincing as possible.

Creative

This category is open to everyone.  The goal is to create the most imaginative, creative, and fantastic design that you can inspired by any style facial hair. Creativity in materials and an emphasis on quality and craftsmanship is encouraged.

MOUSTACHE CATEGORIES

A moustache is composed of facial hair above the upper lip. At international contests, it is agreed that moustache hairs can start growing from up to a maximum of 5/8" (1.5 cm) beyond the end of the upper lip.

Natural Moustache

The moustache as it naturally grows, the more natural the better. No closed curls. Only those hairs growing from within 5/8" (1.5 cm) past the end of the upper lip may be grown out. The moustache may be shaped but without aids.

No styling aids allowed.

Hungarian Moustache

Large and bushy; Hairs combed from the middle of the upper lip to the sides. Only those hairs growing from within 5/8" (1.5 cm) past the end of the upper lip may be grown out.
Styling aids allowed.

Dali Moustache 

Slender, with the tips curved upward. Only hairs on the upper lip may be grown out. The styled Dali Moustache may not extend over the eyebrows.
Styling aids allowed.

English Moustache 

Slender, the hairs are combed from the middle of upper lip to the sides. The tips can be raised slightly. Only hairs growing on the upper lip may be grown out.

Styling aids allowed.

Imperial Moustache

Small and bushy with the tips curving upward. Only hairs on the upper lip may be grown out.
Styling aids allowed.

Freestyle Moustache

Free design and styling of the moustache. All moustaches that do not qualify for other categories may compete in this category. Only those hairs growing from within 5/8" (1.5 cm) past the end of the upper lip may be grown out.

Styling aids allowed.

FULL BEARD CATEGORIES

A full beard consists of hair on the upper and lower lip, the chin, the cheeks, and the sideburns, without any natural or shaven gap. Lengths are measured from the bottom of the lower lip.

Verdi

Beard: short and round at the bottom, no longer than 4" (10 cm) below the bottom of the lower lip. As it grows naturally, the more natural the better.

Moustache: consisting only of hairs growing from within 5/8" (1.5 cm) past the end of the upper lip, should be prominent and not integrated with the beard. Styling aids allowed.

Garibaldi

Beard: round and wide at the bottom, no longer than 8" (20 cm) from the bottom of the lower lip. The beard is as it grows naturally, the more natural the better. The beard should not be styled or tucked under.

Moustache: may not be separated from the beard or made prominent.

No styling aids.

Natural Full Beard, Under 12" (~30 cm)

Full beard as it grows and left natural, no longer than 12" (30 cm) below the bottom of the lower lip, the more natural the better. The moustache may not be highlighted, and the beard may not be tucked under at the bottom.

No styling aids allowed.

Natural Full Beard, 12-18" (~30-45 cm)

Full beard as it grows and left natural, no longer than 12" (30 cm) below the bottom of the lower lip, the more natural the better. The moustache may not be highlighted, and the beard may not be tucked under at the bottom.

Natural Full Beard, 18" and Over (~45+ cm)

Full beard as it grows and left natural, no longer than 12" (30 cm) below the bottom of the lower lip, the more natural the better. The moustache may not be highlighted, and the beard may not be tucked under at the bottom.

No styling aids allowed.

Natural Full Beard with Styled Moustache

Beard: as it grows naturally, the more natural the better. No styling aids allowed in the beard.

Moustache: prominent and consisting only of hairs growing from within 5/8" (1.5 cm) past the end of the upper lip. Styling aids allowed.

These categories are open to anyone who wants to participate.  They are artificial and imaginative creations meant to resemble facial hair of any category, either literally or abstractly.

 

All creations must be attached to the head only (skull and/or jaw, not the neck) & hang hands-free. Each should maintain the shape of the facial hair style being represented. The judges are at liberty to deduct points for any creations that are not beard-shaped or otherwise generally not shaped true to style.

Freestyle Beard

Free design and styling of the beard. All full beards that do not qualify for other categories may compete in this category. 

Styling aids allowed.

PARTIAL BEARD CATEGORIES

A partial beard is any facial hair that is neither a full beard nor a moustache.

Natural Goatee

Goatee as it grows naturally, the more natural the better. Moustache not required. Goatee and moustache can be accentuated but without styling aids. No curled moustaches.
There must be a clean shaven section along the ears, at least 1.5" (4 cm, the width of a razor blade) between the onset of the head hair and the beard.
No styling aids allowed.

Sideburns / Mutton Chops

Must be a true sideburn. No natural or shaven gap by the ear. Chin is shaven at least 1.5" (4 cm, the width of a razor blade) and hair is optional on the upper lip.
The moustache may or may not be connected, also known as the “friendly or unfriendly” chops.
 No styling aids allowed.

Alaskan Whaler / Donegal / Amish

Bushy hair grown on cheeks, chin, and lower lip. No hair grown on upper lip.
No styling aids allowed

Imperial Partial Beard 

Hair on the cheeks and upper lip. There must be clean shaven spaces of at least 1.5" wide (4 cm, the width of a razor blade) on the chin and between the facial hair and the onset of the head hair. The whiskers are styled upwards. No closed curls. The hairs on the upper lip may not be separated from the hairs on the cheeks. The beard may not rise above the level of the eyes.
Styling aids allowed.

Horseshoe Partial Beard (The “Hulk Hogan”)

A full moustache with connected facial hair grown beyond the edges of the mouth and connecting downward to the jawline in an upside-down “U” shape. Chin is shaven at least 1.5" (4 cm, the width of a razor blade). It can be groomed short or grown out at length.

Styling aids allowed.

Triple Point (“Musketeer”)

Narrow chin beard that comes to a point.

Moustache narrow, long, slightly curved, and combed to the sides. Moustache may consist only of hairs that grow within 5/8" (1.5 cm) past the end of the upper lip.

Styling aids allowed.

Freestyle Partial Beard

Free design and styling of the beard. All partial beards that do not qualify for other categories may compete in this category. There must be a clean shaven space at least 1.5" wide (4 cm, the width of a razor) either on the cheek, the chin, above the upper lip, or between the head hair and the beard.

Styling aids allowed.
